Theresa May is doing a very difficult job in exceptionally difficult times; she is doing this job in the service of our country and that is why she should get our support.
The past month has been turbulent politically, set against a back-drop of terrorist attacks and the horrific Grenfell Tower fire. In times like this we should expect our leaders, and all those who play a part in shaping our future, to put the national interest first.
The Prime Minister and her Ministers have a duty to deliver on last June’s Referendum result. However, they face powerful opposition to implementing the will of the people.
We should not underestimate the extent of the opposition to Brexit. It comes not just from politicians, but from the establishment wherever it is found: in Brussels, in the Media, in our Universities, in the House of Lords, and in bureaucracies up and down the country.
You will remember that during the Referendum the establishment's big hitters were called upon, time and again, to support Remain. Many see Brexit as a revolution of the people against the establishment.
Theresa May set out to address the issues that gave rise to the Brexit 'revolution' and to tackle disconnect between the establishment and the people. She is doing this on behalf of ordinary working people across the country who feel the establishment does not work for them. These are voices that I was elected to represent: ordinary working people who want to get on with their lives, and want to build a better future for themselves and their families. That is why I support Brexit and this Government’s agenda.
Unfortunately for those who want to get on with Brexit, the General Election did not give the PM the strong mandate that would have made the task easier. She is, however, still duty bound to deliver a successful Brexit and to build a stronger economy, delivering better living standards, better public services and opportunity for all.
Yes, it is true the task has become more difficult. Set against the backdrop of terror threats and human disaster, Theresa May and the Government must bring us back together; must show resilience and resolve; must show unity of purpose in the national interest - finding solutions to problems, overcoming obstacles, and keep going: – in short we need to draw on the Telford spirit: “nothing great is easy”.
