Telford MP Lucy Allan has praised the work of the community voluntary service in Telford and pledged to do all she can to help with the economic challenges they face.
Lucy Allan, MP for Telford, visited ahead of the final phase of work at The Glebe in Wellington, the headquarters of Telford & Wrekin CVS and numerous county-based charities.
She met with members of the CVS team and was taken around the building to see the charities currently using the facilities.
Mrs Allan said she was very impressed with the organisation and the support it provides for charitable organisations.
Lucy Allan MP said: “This is clearly a unique community facility which brings together a range of community organisations so they can work cohesively, that is a fantastic concept.
“One of the key things that came across to me seeing the venue and seeing the people involved, it showed me that support at an early age will prevent people getting to a situation of crisis later on.
“Helping people that need it with services provided through the voluntary sector enables society to free up costs later on down the line.
“It is a short term view not to support and fund community organisations.”
Telford and Wrekin CVS was created to help people improve their quality of life, work together to identify needs, co-operate with each other and develop partnerships with other agencies to meet needs.
The organisation encourages self help and supports voluntary and community sector groups as well as finding material resources, recruiting volunteers and advising on and promoting new or existing services.
“I am very committed to the concept of helping people at an early stage and providing the support that they need so that they can then contribute to the community themselves and help their families in the future,” added Mrs Allan.
“This is something I am very passionate about. I believe that everybody should make some sort of contribution to society, we are all connected and it is important to demonstrate this connection in whatever way we can.
“Organisations like the CVS face huge challenges in the current economic climate. Funding sources are drying up and they are having to be more creative and inventive with their options.
“There is a great deal of goodwill out there and this organisation is tapping into that good-will. I fully welcome any opportunity to support and encourage that.”
CVS provides advice and support to all of the charities which operate in Telford & Wrekin and runs the Telford Pulling Together initiative. For more information visit www.telfordandwrekincvs.org.uk or contact the team on 01952 567800.
