Lucy Allan MP’s campaign to get traffic lights on roundabouts switched off at quiet times has been backed by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin. The Telford MP has welcomed the news, which comes as Telford & Wrekin Council has confirmed it is examining ways to improve Telford’s traffic lights including switching off the lights on roundabouts at quiet times. Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin said: “I have been talking to Lucy Allan about proposals to switch off roundabout traffic lights at quieter times and she fights Telford’s corner with passion. “The benefits could be two-fold, first for the environment, but also quicker travelling times that will boost commerce and jobs. “This is especially important for a growing town like Telford which has tremendous potential as business hub for both Shropshire and the West Midlands.” Lucy Allan MP said: “I’m really pleased that the Transport Secretary is backing my campaign to help keep Telford moving by turning off these traffic lights at quiet times. “It is good news that the Council is looking into making the traffic lights at some roundabouts in Telford part time. “I have campaigned on this issue since the new lights were installed on roundabouts over a year ago and I’m glad that the Council is taking action. “Keeping Telford moving is good for business, jobs, and growth, and it is frustrating getting stuck at a roundabout in the middle of the night with no other motorists around. Safety is an important consideration.
“At Trench Lock Roundabout which has a series of traffic lights there were 21 accidents in 2014, and a total of 35 accidents at traffic lights in the borough during 2014.
" I welcome the news that the Council is giving this issue full consideration and is already moving to to make sure that this process is done with the concerns of residents in mind."
