Lucy Allan, Telford Candidate in the General Election, took part in a debate with students at Abraham Darby yesterday.
Lucy was debating with the other Telford candidates at the hustings, which was organised by politics teacher Daniel Bull.
Lucy said: “It was great to take part in this hustings event, with probing questions from friendly, articulate students.
“I would like to thank Mr Bull, who organised the debate and got all the candidates involved.
“We discussed health, education, immigration, the economy and the environment, so it was a very vibrant discussion.
“It’s so important to engage with and be accessible to the voters of the future.”
The UKIP Candidate for Telford provoked debate amongst the students by saying that he would like to see students studying “luxury degrees” have to pay their own way, while introducing free tuition fees for other subjects.
Lucy said: “Tuition fees are a major issue. I do not think it is for politicians to decide what subjects students should pursue. We all have our interests and our strengths - to decide for a student that one subject is worthier than another is wrong. The issue struck a chord with the audience. It was good to see young people really getting involved with their potential representatives.”
