Stephen Hammond, Rail Minister came to Telford today to announce the Direct Rail Link to London. Lucy introduced the Minister to business leaders who have long campaigned on this issue. Richard Sheenan, Shropshire Chamber of Commerce and Paul Hinkins Marches LEP board member, met Mr Hammond at Telford Station.
They stressed the importance to business and to the area's future, of being connected both by road, rail and reliable broadband. Lucy Allan had earlier joined Daniel Kawczynski MP for Shrewsbury at a press conference at Shrewsbury station. Mr Kawczynski has worked long and hard on bringing greater connectivitiy to the area.
Lucy said: "Telford's future depends on being connected to the country's main arteries. This an exciting time for Telford with the new Southwater development soon to be unveiled and new jobs coming to the area. Connectivity is essential for business jobs and growth. A direct rail link is a key part of that."
"I would like to see services enabling people to get from London to Telford in time for a full day's work, particularly given we have a major conference centre facility that attracts people from across the country. I told the Minister that we would continue to push for an extension to the direct rail to enable a fuller service."
