Telford MP, Lucy Allan will today criticise the decision to spend £9.3 million on a leaflet delivered to all households as part the EU referendum in a debate in Parliament.
The debate, which is taking place at 4.30 pm this afternoon, was triggered after a petition was signed by over 200,000 people criticising the decision to print the leaflet.
In her speech Lucy will set out the following 3 messages about the EU she feels are conveyed by the decision to spend millions of tax payer’s money:
· It will spend tax payers’ money with no regard for the opinions of the people
· It is willing to waste taxpayer’s money
· It is anti-democratic
Speaking before the debate, Lucy said: “The EU referendum is one of the biggest decisions facing the British people. The overwhelming desire from people is for balanced, impartial information. The government leaflet delivered to homes across the country does not fit this brief.
“To spend £9.3 million of tax payers’ money on a leaflet and online campaign that does not answer the questions people have whilst appearing to be a Government Information Leaflet is questionable. As with the rest of the public sector there is always duty to ensure that value for money is achieved.”
