Telford MP, Lucy Allan has joined with Shropshire MPs, Philip Dunne, Daniel Kawczynski and Owen Paterson for the regular quarterly catch-up with local stakeholders.
In attendance today were representatives from the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Telford Business Environmental Support Scheme for Telford (BESST) and Ricoh to brief the MPs on the big role that environmental sustainability can play in good business practice.
Having met with Ricoh earlier in the year to hear about their biodiversity projects, Lucy was keen to learn of the other projects being carried out that are both good for the environment and business such as improving emissions to lower costs and maintain land value.
Commenting on the briefing, Lucy said: “These sort of environmental projects present a win for both our natural environments and businesses’ profitability.
“Businesses have a responsibility to look after the environment and I am encouraged to see Telford and Shropshire businesses leading in this area taking this responsibility seriously.”
Also in attendance at the meeting was the Royal British Legion who were there to promote their ‘Count Them In’ campaign – a campaign that is calling for questions on the armed forces community to be included in the next UK Census in 2021 so that public bodies, such as councils and the NHS, are better able to deliver services to this group.
The RBL also raised the importance of the Armed Forces Covenant and what signatories should be doing to support the armed forces community.
Commenting on the Count Them In campaign, Lucy said: “Having already pledged my support to this campaign I was pleased to hear how it is progressing.
“The public sector can only effectively support the armed forces community if it has the data on where they are. This simple addition could make a big difference to a lot of people’s lives.”
