Last Friday saw Telford MP, Lucy Allan visit Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School in Sutton Hill to watch year 5 pupils debate the EU referendum and receive a tour of Key Stage 1 and Foundation stage classes.
As part of the School’s curriculum on promoting British values pupils from Year 5 and 6 have been learning about democratic systems, making choices and respect for all. With the EU referendum taking place next week, Lucy was invited to watch year 5 pupils debate the EU referendum in a Question Time style format with 2 teams speaking for each side of the debate.
At the end of the visit Lucy was presented with an ‘Alex Bear’ as a memento from her visit who is now sitting proudly in Lucy’s constituency office.
Speaking after the visit, Lucy Allan MP said: “It was great to visit Sir Alexander Fleming Primary school and meet with pupils and staff.
“The level of debate was incredible and the pupils taking part had clearly spent a lot of time preparing for it. Their level of knowledge was impressive and each panellist made their point strongly, yet politely. There were certainly some politicians in the making.
“Sir Alexander Fleming Primary school is a lovely school and I am very grateful for their invitation to visit.”
The questions the panel discussed were:
* Should we make a decision on whether we stay or leave the EU based on immigration?
* Would British farmers and fishermen be better off in or out of the EU?
* Does the EU need us more than we need them?
* Is Britain more or less at risk of a major terrorist attack if it leaves the EU?
