With the prorogation of the 2015/16 Parliamentary session Lucy has described her first year at Parliament as one of the busiest of her life.
As a full-time MP with no other employment Lucy has been committed to standing up for Telford by speaking in debates, questioning government ministers and scrutinising the government’s education and children policies as a member of the Education Select Committee.
Commenting on the Parliamentary year, Lucy said: “It’s only when I look back at my diary and notes and realise just how busy speaking up for Telford in Parliament has kept me this past year. My constituency is my number one concern and I want to keep it in the Government’s thoughts. Telford deserves to have an active MP that questions the government and takes part in debating the issues that matter.
“Speaking up in Parliament is just one part of the job and I always aim to be accessible to constituents whether through meeting in surgeries or getting out and about in the constituency.
“Representing Telford is an honour and privilege and I look forward to doing my very best in each of the Parliamentary sessions of this term.”
Some of the Parliamentary questions Lucy has asked have been on:
- Georgia Williams and life sentences to the Prime Minister and Justice Secretary
- The probation service regarding Davina Loynton to the Prisons Minister
- Rail electrification of the Transport Secretary
- Telford Town Park winning best UK park to the Sports Minister
- Gender pay gap in Telford to the Equalities Minister
- Youth Unemployment to the Exchequer Secretary
- Cyber harassment to the Prime Minister
In addition to oral questions Lucy has also used written questions to challenge government ministers, some of the questions Lucy has asked were about:
- Traffic Lights in Telford to the Transport Secretary
- HMRC in Telford to the Chancellor of the Exchequer
- Internet harassment to the Home Secretary
- Health Services in Shropshire to the Health Secretary
Lucy has also been active in debates raising issues important to Telford, some of the debates Lucy has spoken in were on:
- Social mobility
- Teenage pregnancy and life chances
- Male suicide rates and mental health
- Children in Care and Kinship carers
- The failed TCMAT schools trust
Lucy has additionally worked away from the House of Commons chamber meeting with Ministers and colleagues to champion Telford and push for investment, some of the meetings Lucy has had include:
- Meeting with the Health Secretary to champion Telford’s hospital needs
- Lobbying the Chancellor for further broadband investment
- Meeting at 10 Downing street to discuss improving life chances
In addition to speaking up for Telford Lucy sits on the Education Select Committee. This session the committee has examined:
- Mental Health of Children in Care
- Holocaust Education
- The Children’s Commissioner for England
- Multi-Academy Trusts
- Social Work Reform
