Lucy Allan, the parliamentary candidate for Telford, visited the brand new state-of-the-art women and children’s unit at the Princess Royal Hospital.
The local campaigner, a former Non-Executive Director of an NHS Trust, was given a tour of the state-of-the art facilities before the open at the end of the month.
The new centre will comprise new maternity and children's wards providing care for people specialist care for women and children.
Lucy said: “It was fantastic to see the new Women and Children's Centre at Princess Royal Hospital. We are truly fortunate to have such an incredible facility, concentrated on a single site, enabling our new mother's and children to have the best possible care without having to travel to Birmingham.
“This is a truly family centred resource and a model for how best to deal with the County's specialist care needs.
“Providing modern, cutting-edge facilities is vital for patients and one centre of expertise, easily accessible to all, is better than duplicating services, which increases running costs, leads to recruitment difficulties and can result in inferior patient care.
A new single site trauma unit for the County, which is not a 'walk in' facility, has been proposed by clinicians as the best model for patient care. In addition there is intended to be 'walk in' Urgent Care centres closer to home. No decision has yet been made as to where the new trauma unit will be located.
Lucy Allan said: "I would like to see this new trauma unit easily accessible to Telford residents with life threatening conditions. Given the increasing population and the NHS's commitment to narrowing health inequalities, it is essential we see increased investment in Telford's health care to meet these needs."
